How do we unwind when things are winding up around us? How can we prevent our bodies, and our skin, from showing the effects that stress have on us? I have some tips that might help.

Taking care of our skin organ is more important than many believe. Often I write about the nutrients that I put into my body. But what you put on your body is equally important, as the ingredients are absorbed through the skin, and do effect your whole body.

A large part of taking care of our skin is indirect. People complain of breakouts, dry or oily skin, and it may have nothing to do with your skincare regime. While the products that you use definitely play a part, and of course we promote using natural, botanically sourced ingredients in skincare, your mood, diet, and the amount of rest that you get, all play a part in achieving that healthy glow.

My tips for a stress-free body:

#1 - A good nights rest - sleep is our body's way of recovering from the day, a time when regeneration and healing take place. Most humans need 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep.

#2 - Eat well. Food has so many amazing qualities that shape who we are. As babies, we need very particular nutrients during one of the most dramatic growing phases of our lives. Many people say that youth can eat whatever they want, but I don't buy it. I believe a school-age child's diet can help with concentration and disease prevention, or at the very least boost immune systems. As we age, our bodies go through many changes. Hormones fluctuate, and diet not only improves the balancing of these hormones, but improves our moods and psychological health. By the way, all of these things contribute to beautiful skin!

#3 - Drink as much water as you can. The best way, and I've said it before, is to keep a glass or bottle of water with you at all times. If it's not there, you don't drink it. Dehydrated skin ages more quickly than hydrated skin. Water also improves mood, it helps prevent headaches, migraines, and colds. Nature's wrinkle prevention is a glass of water away; water is a miracle.

#4 - De-clutter your life, your mind, and yes, your medicine cabinet. Sometimes making more room for the good things in life means it's time to get rid of the bad, or the stuff that's been weighing you down. Whether physical or mental, a cleanse can be as simple as throwing out old bottles of cologne to mentally letting go of the negativity in the world.

A quick peek at how I start my day:

- wake up, drink 1/2 a glass of water (goal is 8 ounces)

- put a cold washcloth over my eyes, follow up with massaging a few drops of our [upcoming] face oil on my forehead and on the skin around my eyes, brush teeth

- breakfast: a typical meal includes coffee with grass-fed milk, a smoothie bowl topped with granola, chia seeds, bananas and coconut flakes, I also take a handful of vitamins & herbs - research what you need at your life stage

- a run or yoga

- drink a glass of water

This is just my morning :)

My advice is to take things one step at a time. Try a different technique to de-stress every week, every month, or whatever suits your lifestyle and schedule. I guarantee that you'll see some small change in your overall health, including your skin.
